Management Practicum

Preceptors for Managerial Practicum for Undergraduate Nursing Students - NUR 486. In the Fall semester of the undergraduate student's senior year, students spend the semester with a nurse manager in health care delivery systems throughout the area. Students identify the site and type of care and they are matched with the preceptor.

The preceptor must have a bachelor's degree in nursing. School of Nursing faculty contact the preceptor either directly or through the designated person in the organization to determine that person's willingness to serve as a preceptor.

Students spend 80 hours at mutually agreed on times though out the semester learning about management. Included in that 80 hours is time spent (10 hours) doing a project that contributes both to the organization and to the student's learning (a Service Learning Project).

The preceptor provides guidance throughout the 80 hours, identifying learning opportunities based on the student's needs and evaluates the student at the completion of the course. Faculty are available to the preceptor to provide further guidance. The School of Nursing maintains a database of current employment and licensure information on each preceptor.

Between 55 and 80 students are placed each Fall semester with contact for placement made in the Summer.

Individuals interested in serving as preceptors should contact Dr. Mary Corley.
