Clinical Projects
Carver Health
Promoting Health Carver is a component of Virginia Commonwealth University's far reaching partnership with the Carver neighborhood to support community revitalization. Carver health, a component of this partnership, builds on VCU's successful child Health Linkages project.
The project objectives focus first on Carver children's health. Education, counseling, outreach and support services are essential components of promoting health life-styles. The project integrates the skills and knowledge of faculty, staff and students in VCU's Schools of Nursing, Social work and Dentistry and the Department of Psychology.
The objectives are to:
• Provide health screening and assessment for the people of the Carver community.
• Work with community leaders to identify priorities for services.
• Develop and integrated service model for follow up care and referral, including care coordination.
• Provide health education and counseling to students, parents, mentors, school personnel, and adults within the Carver community.

Community Collaboration
For 100 years the School of Nursing has worked with Richmond's neighborhoods and communities. In 1901 Sadie Heath Cabaniss, the School's first director, established the Nurses Settlement House which later became the IVNA (Instructive Visiting Nurses Association). Agnes Dillon Randolph, the first director of the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing, established the first course in public health nursing. In 1935 public health nursing became an important course in the St. Philip School of Nursing curriculum.
Today the School of Nursing serves the surrounding communities through its association with community agencies such as Communities in Schools, CHIP of Richmond, the Fan Free Clinic, William Byrd Community House, St. Joseph's Villa, Craig Health Center, Norge Primary Care and many others.
