Affiliate Faculty & Preceptor Benefits/ Services
Clinical Preceptors are experts in nursing or health care who engage in one-to-one teaching of the students in actual clinical settings but do not have formal affiliate faculty appointments in the School of Nursing (SON).
Clinical preceptors may request an affiliate faculty appointment with the School of Nursing of Virginia Commonwealth University. Each Department* has specific criteria and requirements. For information you may contact the Department Chair person:
*As of August 2007, the School of Nursing has reorganized its department structure to move from three departments to two departments. The two new departments are Adult Health and Nursing Systems (includes Adult Health, Psychiatric-Mental Health, and Nursing Administration/Leadership) and Family and Community Health (includes Women's, Children's, Family and Community Health).
VCUCARD is the official identification card for the University.
School of Nursing Clinical affiliate and Preceptors are eligible to have a card. The card may be used to access library services, discounts at MCVH cafeteria, VCU Bookstore, entrance into certain secured buildings on campus, riding VCU Shuttle buses and a variety of discount offerings at theme parks, recreational offerings, etc. For a list of discount offerings available to faculty and staff, visit website: http://www.hr.vcu.edu/worklife/discounts.htm
Library Services
(Available to preceptors and affiliate faculty)
Various services are available with the VCUCARD. The James Branch Cabell Library, located on the Academic Campus, and the Tompkins-McCaw Library, located on the Medical College of Virginia Campus, offers a rich array of print, digital, and other collections to students, faculty, staff, and health professionals of VCU. Borrowing Library Resources
Affiliate faculty and preceptors must have a VCUCARD to borrow library resources. By presenting your VCUCARD & Social Security Number, you are able to check out library resources. To find out more about borrowing, visit the web at: http://www.library.vcu.edu/tml/preceptors
Remote Access to Library Databases
With a VCUCARD Number, you are able to access library databases and an increasing number of electronic full text journals by computer through an Internet Service Provider from your home or office. After obtaining a VCUCARD Number, visit the library web site at www.library.vcu.edu and select “Connect from Home”. There you will find instructions for set-up and access.
Library Training Opportunities
The library offers health information, continuing education and training programs designed to enhance library research skills. A schedule of training opportunities can be found on the library’s web page at: http://www.library.vcu.edu/tml/classes.html
Book Store Discounts
As part of the SON Faculty, you receive a 10% discount on purchases, excluding software. Software is priced for academic sale and is already significantly discounted. If you need texts, references or electronic media, medical equipment, lab coats, scrubs, MCV imprinted merchandise—the bookstore staff is available to help you. The MCV Campus bookstore is located at 601 N. 10 th Street next to the “N” Parking Deck. The Academic Campus bookstore is located 1111 West Broad Street . Alert the cashier that you are part of the SON faculty to receive your discount.
Computer Procurement
Affiliate faculty and Alumni are eligible to purchase microcomputer hardware and software (both PC and Macintosh) at discounted prices through either online@VCU on the Academic campus or the MCV Campus Bookstore on the MCV Campus. You may also make personal purchases from Apple, Dell or Gateway via special pricing offers. For additional information, go to web site:

OnLine@VCU
VCU offers Internet services at a very competitive price. As SON Faculty, you may be eligible to purchase services for a minimal annual/semi-annual fee. You will need to visit the site, present your VCUCARD, and fill out an application located in the MCV Bookstore, 10 th & Leigh Streets or 907 Floyd Avenue on the academic campus.
