Risk and Resilience

Faculty members working in the area of risk and resilience are interested in the concepts of risk, resilience, coping, mastery and other related concepts. Risk is processes or factors that present challenges, threats or barriers to health. Resilience is processes and outcomes related to one’s abilities to cope with, adapt to, or transcend those challenges, threats or barriers.

Current Research
Reducing risk and enhancing resilience are vital to health promotion and management of acute and chronic illness for individuals across lifespan, families and communities. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, faculty members study the concepts of risk and resilience through the use of biological, physiological, behavioral and observational measures, naturalistic observation, epidemiological methods, and model development and testing. Several studies focus on understanding the processes of risk and resilience and others are focused on the development and testing of interventions to reduce risk, enhance resilience and promote resilient outcomes.
