Critical Illness

The School of Nursing faculty engages in interdisciplinary research that explores the physiological measures and outcomes of critical illness and focuses on improving outcomes and reducing the complications in critically ill adults.

Current Faculty Research

  • strategies for reduction of ventilator-associated pneumonia
  • oral care interventions to reduce microbial flora in critically ill adults
  • peri-intubation interventions in trauma victims
  • prevention of streptococcal endocarditis through vaccine development
  • management of sedation and agitation in critically ill adults
  • design and optimization of airway management devices

Collaborative Opportunities
School of Nursing faculty collaborate in research in the VCU Reanimation Engineering Shock Center (VCURES), an interdisciplinary center that is dedicated to the ongoing study and development of technologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of shock and its complications. Faculty have collaborative relationships with the VCU schools of Dentistry, Engineering and Medicine.
