Dr. Lewis is a Professor Emerita in the School of Nursing. A native of Massachusetts, she received an AB in English and American Literature from Brandeis University and a BS in nursing from Boston University. She traveled to California for her Master's degree, which is from the University of California at San Francisco. Her master's program included preparation as a women's health nurse practitioner. Her PhD is in health policy from the Heller School at Brandeis University. She holds a post-master's certificate in online teaching from the University of California at Los Angeles and has completed a post-doctoral fellowship in genetics at the National Institute of Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Lewis has received the Distinguished Professional Service Award from the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, has been elected to the National Academy of Practice in Nursing, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She has received the Mary Ann Garrigan Award from the Theta-at-Large chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She has received the Founders Award for Service from the International Society of Nurses in Genetics and the Nicholas A. Cummings award from the National Academics of Practice.

Scholarship
Health Care for women of childbearing age; genetics; infertility; use of technology in nursing education. Dr. Lewis'program of scholarship is in the area of women’s health. She has studied the effect of previous infertility on pregnancy, She has written extensively on public policy issues affecting genetics and genomics, and is working to implement the Essential Nursing Competencies and Curricula Guidelines for Genetics and Genomics.
