The Women's Health concentration provides students with the education and experience necessary
to become nurse practitioners. Graduates are prepared to sit for the certification
examination for women's health care nurse practitioners administered by the
National Certification Corporation. This is the only advanced practice certification
in women's health.
Students have
opportunities to work with the faculty on research projects in diverse areas,
such as adolescent reproductive health, infertility, childbirth education,
and breast feeding. Faculty in the women's health specialty include nationally
recognized leaders in The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal
Nurses (AWHONN), Lamaze International, the Nurses' Professional Group of the
American Society for Reproductive Medicine, The International Society of Nurses
in Genetics, and the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants.
The maternal
child nursing program began in the late 1960's and the women's health nurse
practitioner specialty has been an option at our school since the early
1970's. Graduates of our program work locally and nationally, and many
of our alumnae serve as preceptors for current students. Student clinical
placements are available at a wide variety of sites, including private
office practices, health department clinics, and women's specialty clinics
such as ones operated by the VCU Health System.
