The Family Health concentration builds on the knowledge and competencies of baccalaureate
education to prepare nurses for advanced practice as family nurse practitioners
in primary care settings. Graduates are qualified to sit for certification
for nurse practioner by taking either exam from from American Nurses
Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse
Practioners (AANP).
In a rapidly changing health care environment, graduates of the program
will have the knowledge and skills needed to be competitive as primary
care providers in a variety of health care settings. Clinical placements
are arranged by faculty to meet the learning needs of the individual
student. Students are assigned to experienced preceptors who work with
faculty to provide a varity of excellent clinical learning opportunities
in sites located in the Richmond area as well as in other locations
througout Virginia. Opportunites for clinical practice experiences
in rural and urban underserved communities are also available.
Faculty in familty health
have active research programs related to individual family functions and include
federally funded research projects. Experiences include causes and clinical
practicea in child, women's, adult and family health.
