In the Undergraduate Program, students have child health clinical experiences in both community and hospital settings. Students practice as a part of University Communities in School Projects and provide health screening for Richmond City school children.

Students have opportunities to work with faculty on research projects related to child development, infant feeding, child and family functions with chronic illness, and child growth.

Students also provide care for infants, children, and adolescents in a large medical center hospital adjacent to the School of Nursing. These children, many of whom have been referred to the VCU Health System for specialized care, have a variety of illnesses. The student may care for a child hospitalized on one of the general pediatric units or in a specialized setting such as Same Day Surgery, Pediatric Intensive Care or Neonatal Intensive Care. In addition, care may be provided for a child receiving a follow-up treatment in one of the Health System's child-centered specialty clinics.
