Jackie Denise Jackson Memorial Cultural Diversity Lectureship

Michael Rao, PhD, who became the fifth president of Virginia Commonwealth University and president of the VCU Health System on July 1, 2009, will address the issue of diversity in higher education and at VCU. Dr. Rao comes to VCU with the experience of three successful presidencies at universities of increasing size and complexity. Most recently, he served as president and professor of Central Michigan University, a public doctoral research institution with 28,000 students. As this will be one of the first opportunities for the VCU community to hear Dr. Rao speak, the event is open to all VCU faculty, staff and students, as well as School of Nursing alumni.

Established in 2000, the lectureship celebrates the life and work of Jackie Denise Jackson, a loyal and dedicated member of the VCU School of Nursing community for more than 18 years.

Legacy Lectureship in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing

Speaker: Teena McGuinness, PhD, APRN, BC, Professor, School of Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Date: Oct. 28, 2009
Time: 4 to 5 p.m., with reception to follow from 5 to 6 p.m.
Location: VCU School of Nursing Building, Younger Auditorium

Teena McGuinness, PhD, APRN, BC, a 1982 graduate of the VCU School of Nursing’s master’s program, will address access to mental health care and the huge global disease burden of mental disorders, and also explore why the need for psychiatric nurses is so great.

Established in 2002 by four former nursing faculty members, the Legacy Lectureship brings prominent psychiatric-mental health nursing scholars to the school to raise awareness of mental health issues and underscore the importance of psychiatric nursing.

Mahoney-Hamner Nursing Alumni Lectureship

Speaker: Patricia Grady, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director, National Institute of Nursing Research
Date: Feb. 10, 2010
Time: 4 to 5 p.m., with reception to follow from 5 to 6 p.m.
Location: VCU School of Nursing Building, Younger Auditorium

Patricia Grady, PhD, RN, FAAN, has served as director of the National Institute of Nursing Research since 1995. An internationally recognized researcher, Dr. Grady’s scientific focus has primarily been in stroke, with emphasis on arterial stenosis and cerebral ischemia.

The Mahoney-Hamner Lectureship, the school’s oldest endowed lectureship, was established through a grassroots alumni and community fundraiser effort led by Anne F. Mahoney (Class of 1929) and Nora Spencer Hamner (Class of 1914).
