Education
Technology: computer requirements
The School of Nursing computer hardware and software requirements for entering students mirror those of the university. Additional requirements for the School of Nursing include the purchase of Microsoft Office and a printer. For a list of software available to you as a student of the University, please see the Technology Services software page.
The University provides means for purchasing a new computer meeting all of the hardware requirements. The getIT program has Apple, Dell, and Lenovo laptops for students to purchase. The advantage of purchasing through the University is the ability to use the fixIT program to have your computer serviced in the event of hardware failure.
If you did not purchase your computer through the University, it may still be possible to utilize the services of the fixIT program. Out of warranty repair service is $45 for diagnosis and $65/hr plus parts.
Other items to consider
In addition to purchasing a computer, you may want to consider the following items:
A USB headset/microphone
A USB headset/microphone will be used in various programs for creating podcasts, participating in synchronous classes or answering questions on the HESI exam (this will be a new requirement). If you do purchase a headset/microphone, you should make sure that it is compatible with Windows 7 or compatible with your Mac. They will usually have a bit of text on the packaging that will indicate their compatibility.
A printer
When you purchase a printer, make sure that it is compatible with your operating system. There are many options available including wireless laser printers and printers that are compatible with iPads. Consider your needs carefully and do a little research before purchasing. There is a computer lab located in the School of Nursing that has a high-capacity printer available for your convenience.
A mobile device
Mobile devices are required for students in the master's program. Many other students ask for recommendations for mobile devices. The VCU School of Nursing recommends the iPod Touch or iPad to use during your clinical experiences.
