VCU School of Nursing is pleased to offer a Masters and Post-Masters concentration in Nursing Administration and Leadership (NAL). The NAL program is designed to prepare nurses to assume leadership roles where health care needs them most, in positions such as nurse managers and directors, quality management, risk improvement, marketing and nurse recruitment, therefore, creating a richer range of career options for program graduates.

Mission
The Unique contribution of the Department of Integrative Systems is its macrosystems perspective on the development and application of knowledge for nursing. The Mission of the Department is to engage in research and clinical scholarship, education, and service that illuminate the dynamic interplay among multiple systems. Of particular interest is the contextual impact of organizations, families and individuals.

Program Description
Welcome to the Virginia Commonwealth University Nursing Administration and Leadership (NAL) concentration in the Master’s and Post-Master's program. The concentration is a novel program of study that includes the integration of leadership and administrative content. The NAL concentration prepares graduates to function in a rapidly changing health care system with urban diverse underserved populations while maintaining the integrity of a nursing core for advanced practice nursing. This is the program for individuals who aspire to be effective decision makers and to participate in developing a health care system that provides accessible and affordable high quality care. We believe that future health care administrators and leaders must have the opportunity to learn from individuals who are currently successful health care leaders in the community. Our faculty includes tenured, tenure-track and collateral clinical faculty who have academic preparation and clinical expertise relevant to their areas of teaching responsibility. They participate fully in the faculty and are available for advising on both academic and career development.

NURS 505 Advanced Nursing Practice: Computer and Information Technology - Provides student with knowledge and skill necessary to incorporate information technology into nursing practice and to be successful users of information technology programs and systems.

NURS 512 Advanced Nursing Science - Focuses on theory and research in advanced practice with aim of critique and utilization of current theories and findings/outcomes. Emphasizes analysis and synthesis of nursing  science in the context of relevant programs, practice problems, issues, and concerns. Reviews major research design and analytic strategies.

NURS 509 Advanced Nursing Practice: Community - Examines basic principles, processes, and methods of program planning for health education and health promotion programs utilized by advanced practice nurses.  Analyzes community assessment techniques to diagnose and prioritize health needs/problems and to plan, provide and evaluate care for individuals, families and population groups in conjunction with community-based organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What factors does the admissions committee consider?
Our requirements are an undergraduate degree, acceptable scores from the GRE (score must be less than 5 years old), a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and an interview may be requested. We evaluate the students total application package and do not have a cut-off score for the GRE.

Is a specific undergraduate degree required? We have students with clinical backgrounds and non-clinical backgrounds. However, we do require transcripts reflecting successful completion of undergraduate courses in economics, accounting, and research and health assessment. Economics and accounting may be taken after admission for students enrolled in full-time or part-time study.

 What are the application deadlines? November 1st – Spring admission December 1st – Accelerated admission February 1st – Fall admission

What is the profile of an admitted student in the program? Our students come into our program with a broad spectrum of backgrounds and experience. Some of our students have worked in clinical and non-clinical settings, and some are recent graduates. The diversity of our students provides a unique ability to learn from each other. Their willingness to work hard, develop strong management skills and appreciate and understand the health care system are the key components to a student accepted into the program.
 
How long will it take me to complete the program? A full-time student can complete the program in two years. Part-time students can complete the program in three years.
 
What are typical careers for a graduate with an M.S. in Nursing Administration and Leadership? The health care system is a dynamic field in which new kinds of opportunities are constantly emerging. Hospitals, group practices, home health care, and long-term care are just a few of the areas graduates will work. Graduates will be prepared to be successful leaders in managerial roles in areas that provide, regulate, finance and supply health services.

Is the program accredited? Yes, the Master’s degree program in nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Can I transfer credits from another institution? Students may take 12 of the required credits for the respective program at another institution and transfer them to VCU. The School of Nursing will determine the acceptability of courses for transfer credit.

What financial support is available? Scholarships, grants and loans are available on a need basis. Applications for assistance must be filed for all forms of financial assistance, including traineeships. A free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be obtained from the VCU Financial Aid Department, Richmond, VA 23298-0244. Limited financial assistance in the form of scholarships and traineeships are available from the School of Nursing. An application will be made available for students applying and enrolled in the School of Nursing.
