The Gamma Omega STTI Chapter Awards of Recognition recognizes outstanding nurses whose contributions to nursing fulfill the goals of Sigma Theta Tau. The deadline to nominate a peer for this award is March 1st.

2009 Chapter Award - Patrick Coyne
Excellence in Research

Patrick Coyne, MSN, APRN, FAAN, is a clinical nurse specialist and clinical director of the Thomas Palliative Care Service at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, where he also works with the oncology team at the Massey Cancer Center. Mr. Coyne has initiated and overseen numerous patient referrals on difficult cancer- and HIV-pain management cases originating throughout the mid-Atlantic region. He received a bachelor of science degree in Nursing from Niagara University in New York, and a master's degree in the Science of Nursing with a functional area in Administration from the College of Nursing and Allied Health at the University of Texas, El Paso.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Coyne conducts research and has published numerous articles related to pain management, symptom control, and issues in end-stage disease. Mr. Coyne was recognized as one of the top pain-management providers in a survey of more than 3,000 licensed medical and osteopathic physicians who were asked which specialists they would choose if they or their family members needed medical treatment; the honor included a listing in the 2004 Top Docs issue of Richmond Magazine. Mr. Coyne was also selected for the Mayday Fund's Mayday Pain & Society Fellowship in 2004.

2009 Chapter Award - Beverly Ross
Excellence in Clincial Practice

Beverly Ross has been employed as a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist through the Department of Veteran Affairs at the McGuire Health Center since 1980. She is the Lead Women Veterans Program Manager responsible for promoting women veterans health behaviors and providing health care to over 2,000 women veterans. She serves as an advocate and liaison between women veterans and Department of Veterans Affairs service providers and serves as a subject matter expert regarding communication of health care trends and issues involving women veterans' health at the local, network and/or national level specializing in sexual trauma and ethics. In addition, she provides direct therapy to patients and their families. She is the Editor of Women Veteran News, a contributor to News from NOVA, Virginia Nurses Today, the Minority Veterans Coordinator, and a member of the VNA Board of Directors and past ANA delegate. She serves as a clinical instructor and preceptor to VCU graduate psychiatric nursing students.
