TEACHING:

I maintain an active (part time) practice as an Adult Psychiatric – Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and teach in VCU’s Psychiatric – Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Doctorate of Nursing Practice programs. Additionally, I guest lecture nationally on topics as diverse as Operational Psychiatry, Cognitive Therapy, Medical Ethics, Health Policy, Mental Health Promotion and Mental Illness Prevention.

RESEARCH:

My early research experience concentrated on outcome evaluation of nurse led military psycho-educational programs.  More recently, my Capstone focus concentrated on the United States Military’s Mental Health Promotion and Mental Illness Prevention programs.

SERVICE:

2013-Present: Working Group Chair to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Task Force on Military Mental Health.

2012-2013: Psychiatric – Mental Health Nursing Sub Specialty Advisor to the Navy Surgeon General. Led community of over 100 Navy psychiatric nursing professionals supporting the psychiatric care of over 8.3 million beneficiaries.  As a member of the Navy’s Psychological Health Advisory Board (PHAB), evaluated and drafted Department of Navy policy on specialty specific matters.

2010-2013: Mental Health Specialty Consultant to Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington D.C. Provided and coordinated advanced practice psychiatric – mental health standard of care review for all adverse events between 2010 and 2013.

2009-2012: Mental Health Specialty Consultant to 2nd Marine Division’s Suicide Prevention Council, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Provided subject matter expertise to line leaders on its organizational response to suicide.

2012: Working Group Leader to the Federal Nursing Service Council (FNSC) primarily responsible for developing a Joint Service strategic planning document for Psychiatric – Mental Health nursing.

2012: Working Group Leader to Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery chartered Post Graduate APRN Residency Development Program specifically designing the Psychiatric – Mental Health Residency process.
